Anonymizing Networks

JAP Anon Proxy - A proxy system designed to allow browsing the Web anonymously. It is based in Germany. Written in the Java programming language. Cross-platform, free, and designed to be easy to use, it sends requests through a cascade of encrypting mixes, thereby hiding the origin of any connection. The JAP client program allows the user to choose among several Mix Cascades (i.e. a group of anonymization proxies) offered by independent organizations. Users may choose by themselves whom of these operators they will trust, and whom they won't. This is an important difference to peer-to-peer based anonymity networks like Tor (anonymity network) and I2P, whose anonymisation proxies are anonymous themselves, that means the users have to rely on unknown proxy operators. As a reaction to the threat from local authorities, the system has spread internationally. Since May 2005, JAP can also be used as a client for the Tor and since 2006 also for the Mixminion network.

Tor - Tor (The Onion Router) is a free software implementation of second-generation onion routing - a system enabling its users to communicate anonymously on the Internet. Tor aims to protect its users against traffic analysis attacks. Tor operates an overlay network of onion routers that enables two things: anonymous outgoing connections (1) and anonymous hidden services (2). 1) Users of the Tor network run an onion proxy on their machine. This software connects out to Tor, periodically negotiating a virtual circuit through the Tor network. Tor employs cryptography in a layered manner (hence the onion analogy), ensuring perfect forward secrecy between routers. At the same time, the onion proxy software presents a SOCKS interface to its clients. Once inside the Tor network, the traffic is sent from router to router, ultimately reaching an exit node and is forwarded on to its original destination. Viewed from the destination, the traffic appears to originate at the Tor exit node. 2) Also Tor can provide anonymity to servers. By using the Tor network, it is possible to host servers in such a way that their network location is unknown.

Web Proxy Servers, Lists & Tools

Anon List - A list of public web proxy servers all on one website. Web proxy servers represent a usual web-pages, very similar to pages of search engines. They allow a user to access other sites through them. They generally use PHP or CGI to implement the proxying functionality. CGI proxies are frequently used to gain access to web sites blocked by corporate or school proxies. Since they usually hide the user's own IP address from the web sites they access through the proxy, they are also used to gain a degree of anonymity. This site daily checks all proxy servers for many important parameters and presents the results in one big table.

Anonymouse - Famous web proxy service. From the page: "Many mice surf the web under the illusion that their actions are private and anonymous. Unfortunately, it isn't so. Every time you visit a site for a piece of cheese, you leave a calling card that reveals where you're coming from, what kind of computer you have, and other details. And many cats keep logs of all your visits, so that they can catch you! This service allows you to surf the web without revealing any personal information. It is fast, it is easy, and it is free!"

FoxyProxy - A Firefox extension which automatically switches an internet connection across one or more proxy servers based on URL patterns. Also FoxyProxy automates the manual process of editing Firefox's Connection Settings dialog. Proxy server switching occurs based on the loading URL and the switching rules you define. This software offers a lot more functions than regular users would need including ability to define which proxy to use (or none) for arbitrary URLs using wildcards, regular expression and other conveniences, support for Tor, Proxy Auto-Config (PAC) support, ability to force Firefox to perform DNS lookups through a SOCKS4a/5 server, and more.

Guardster - The Guardster web proxy is free of charge and no fees are charged for its use. It is supported by its advertisers. Guardster does not collect any personal information from its users. Guardster is a private company based in Anguilla, which has very strong privacy laws. Guardster is not associated with any governments or their agencies, anywhere. The advertising is targeted based upon keywords from the webpage being viewed.

httProxy - A simple Firefox extension using which you can open any web page via Web Based Proxy Server (also known as CGI Proxy Servers). Currently, it supports three types of cgi proxies (examples provided to access http://abc.com/xyz, via cgiproxy.com): 1) Anonymizer Style (the target web page can be simple appended to the url; like http://cgiproxy.com/?http://abc.com/xyz); 2) NYUD Style (a server name is appended to the domain part of the URL and the remaining url comes after the proxy url; like http://abc.com.cgiproxy.com/xyz); 3 PkBlogs Style (This one only supports accessing blogspot.com by appending the blogname to http://www.pkblogs.com/, so accessing my blogspot blog would be done using:  http://www.pkblogs.com/ovaiskhan).

Proxify - A web-based anonymous proxy service which allows anyone to surf the Web privately and securely. There is no software to install or complicated instructions to follow. Just visit Proxify with your Web browser and enter a URL (website address) in the form provided. Proxify will fetch and then modify each webpage that you visit so that all resources in it (such as links, images, and form submissions) point back through Proxify. Proxify will also filter out unsafe and undesirable webpage components such as popups, banner advertisements, and malicious JavaScript code. Proxify is a wholly owned subsidiary of UpsideOut, Inc. and operates out of New York, USA.

Public Web Proxies - Advanced list of public web (cgi) proxy servers with detailed information and search capabilities. Daily checks proxy features such as anonymity level, form submitting ability, url encoding, referrer hiding, ad filtering, image, cookie and script blocking, ssl access, popup ads and average access time. Alows users to rate proxies and leave comments. Allows to search for proxy servers using various conditions.

Relakks - Provides two things. 1) A secure, rentable VPN connection originating in Sweden; 2) Certain assurances with respect to their data retention policies and legal protections as a Swedish business. The firts means that when someone uses Relakks.com, for all intents and purposes their internet traffic originates from Sweden - and there is no (easy) way to track that person's connection back to the originating country or ISP. The Relakks.com VPN literally re-routes all of the client's traffic through Sweden. The second means that there are legal protections greater than or equal to the protections offered to that person in their home country.

The Cloak - Web proxy with encrypted connection. The Cloak sits between your computer and any web sites you visit. It prevents the web sites you visit from finding out who you are. It supports encrypted surfing with minimal overhead. Also it allows user-controlled content filtration. Remote cookies give you cookie functionality, without leaving a trail of cookies on your machine. You can use sites that need cookies, but they can't track you from session to session... and advertising networks like doubleclick can't build up a profile of your surfing habits.

Browser Tests

Advanced IP Test - This IP test demonstrates that any server you visit can find out your real IP address if you enable Java. Due to security flaw in Java, the applet can access the web server directly ignoring proxy settings in your browser. That direct access reveals your real IP. Besides, Java applet can also read your local network IP from environment variables and transmit it to the web server.

BrowserSpy - BrowserSpy can tell you all kinds of detailed information about you and your browser. Stuff like the version of your browser. What kind of things it supports and what it doesn't support. Furthermore it can provide you detailed information about JavaScript, Java, Plug-ins, Components, Bandwidth, Language, Screen, Hardware, IP, Cookies, Web Server, and much more.

Privacy.net Test - Privacy analysis of your Internet connection. This site analyzes the privacy of your Internet connection and shows what web sites can know about you when you visit. The information can be used to display personalized web content for your country and web browser and increase security for business transactions.

Misc. Surfing Tools

Black Box Search - Return proxied results, which (if you dont click on too much ad junk) will not create any tracking cookies on your machine, nor reveal your IP address when typing in the search. You can freely navigate the links for the result pages through our proxy. (Notice the blackbox link at the top of the page when you click on the next search results) You can also use the search boxes on the results pages to quickly do another search.

BugMeNot - Quickly bypass the login of web sites that require compulsory registration and/or the collection of personal/demographic information. All of the username/password accounts listed on bugmenot are added by users such as yourself.

Scroogle - A safe search engine, giving you anonymity using Google (and Yahoo). The main difference is that your IP and you remain anonymous. It prevents Google from collection data on your search habits, data that is not only being turned over to the State but to corporate interests that make money off of your search patterns. You can include it in your Firefox or IE search bar.

XeroBank Browser (former Torpark) - A free anonymous web browser. The main advantages compared to other anonymous web browsers is that xB Browser requires no configuration, technical knowledge, or installation. xB Browser is open source so you can feel safe knowing what goes into xB Browser. Additionally, it is even portable on a USB stick so you can take it to work, school, or on vacation.
